An intermediate shaft is in the middle and link the parts, used in the equipment, automobile and marine industries. It simply transmits torque from one place to another, supported by bearings. It is not connected directly to the motor or other power source, and is also not connected directly to the part of the mechanism that is doing the work.
The intermediate shaft may be coupled to those with gears, or pulleys, or some other method of transmitting torque; there also may be multiple intermediate shafts used in series to build the drivetrain. Often an intermediate shaft will be part of a multi-stage speed-reduction (or -increasing) geartrain, but sometimes they are just used to take the torque from one physical location to another.
